History
It was in Tazacorte where in 1492 the Castilian conquerors disembarked and where, after the conquest of the Canary island of San Miguel de La Palma ending in 1493, the first settlements in the Valley of Aridane arose, as this was the place with the most fertile land, with a river called Tazacorte or de La Caldera, the only course of running water in the area, and a stretch of coast that allowed easy communication with the outside world.

Sugar cane soon became the main crop of the Hacienda de Abajo, so called since the sixteenth century and located in Tazacorte. It was the first and oldest sugar cane estate of La Palma as well as the most rich and productive, according to don Jesús Pérez Morera, professor at the University of La Laguna, who did a splendid piece of research on this matter.
