The Fundación Canaria Centro Internacional de Agricultura Biológica (CIAB), an organisation dedicated to the promotion and development of organic agriculture on the island of La Palma, in collaboration with the Asociación de Productores y Consumidores de Productos Ecológicos de La Palma (Ecopalma), is currently publishing and distributing a map-brochure showing the points of sale and other services provided by organic operators on the island.

This initiative is part of the "Promotion of organic consumption and marketing" programme carried out by the organisation chaired by the Councillor for Agriculture and Vice-President of the Cabildo of La Palma, José Adrián Hernández Montoya, who pointed out that this leaflet is being published to coincide with the start of 2021, the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables. Hernández Montoya stressed that the aim of this proposal is to encourage the consumption of fruit and vegetables, stressing that they should be local, seasonal and ecological, in order to promote a healthy and varied diet with minimum environmental impact and which also generates a local economy.

A digital version will also be launched shortly, which will be accessible from the Foundation's website www.fundacionciab.org, and it is planned that this version will be easily editable so that it can be updated quickly and so that new additions, cancellations or any type of change in terms of addresses, opening hours, etc. can be made.

Ecofinca Nogales is an agricultural entity located in the north-east of the island of La Palma. Its history began in the 1960s when Nicasio Piñero Concepción started farming on the current land. At that time, the focus was on conventional agriculture, focused on the production of bananas and wine.

In the 1990s, the Sociedad Agraria de Transformación Las Toscas was created, following the guidelines of Nicasio Piñero. Since then, they have been committed to organic farming, developing environmentally friendly processes and guaranteeing quality products and food safety.

Today, the company has expanded its focus to ecotourism with the creation of EcoFinca Nogales, which allows visitors to learn about the values of sustainability and preservation that guide its activities.

The Polish Jolanta Klimaszewska and the Belgian Gino de Reuwe landed on the island of La Palma in 2006, looking for a place where they could gain in health and wellbeing. Although they were already brewing beer, it was not until 2009 that they professionalised their passion: the ideas they had in their heads became a reality in the form of a microbrewery, to be established in the municipality of Tijarafe, where they could combine tradition and the latest technology to produce quality craft beer.
The reasons why Cervezas Isla Verde chose Tijarafe to develop its activity are various, but mainly it was the climate, the availability of good quality water and the respect for tradition and rurality that best suited the philosophy of this business. The first olive oil mill on La Palma will be inaugurated next Saturday, 12 October, in Los Canarios, in the municipality of Fuencaliente. The product of this olive oil mill, a pioneer on the island, owned by Juan José Santos, is marketed under the Palmaoliva brand. It is made with arbequina, picual, hojiblanca, koroneiki and arbosana olives. In 2018 it won the Oliva de Oro award for the best extra virgin olive oil in the regional competition organised by the Cabildo de Tenerife.

In the most remote times, the aboriginal herds grazed in the communal pastures that made up the canton of Tedote; later, agriculture became the dominant economic activity. Vineyards, cereals, vegetables, potatoes... have been cultivated in these lands, but to think of La Breña is to think of mountains, tobacco, cigars and cigars.

The mid-19th century saw the arrival of the novel tobacco crop, already widespread in the Americas. Emigrant peasants who returned from Cuba introduced it to the island, and La Breña was one of the best areas where tobacco plantations proliferated, standing out for its high quality.

Many hectares were dedicated to harvesting the famous plants; men and women cooperated in the work, pampering each of the leaves that ended up tied in bunches on long cujes (sticks arranged horizontally) for drying. Layers of different sizes, colours and textures were then selected and piled up. The craftsman would then use a knife on his wooden board to shape the cigars, which are so highly prized by good smokers. Nowadays there are many cigar rollers who roll tobacco in Breña Alta; the hopeful future of the sector means that this deep-rooted tradition, where the direct relationship between Cuba and La Palma can be felt, is being kept alive.

Don Manuel Quevedo Alemán (1872-1968), who was said to be a man ahead of his time, founded the Aldea Rum factory in the Gran Canarian municipality of Aldea de San Nicolás de Tolentino in 1936. Born in Arucas, he emigrated at a very young age to Cuba and in 1888 to Santo Domingo, where, in both places, he worked in the sugar mills.

After returning from the Antilles, at the beginning of the 20th century, he worked in the shadow of his father and his uncle José Alemán, owner of the sugar factory in Bañaderos, later taking over the management of the important factory in the city of Guía (Gran Canaria), acquired in 1909 by the English businessman Mr. Leacock. At the age of 37, Quevedo was already a recognised master of sugar and rum. Between 1954 and 1956, the factory was transferred to the agricultural company Rodríguez Quintana, who carried out a thorough remodelling of the industry with a new building, a new still, vats and storage tanks, while maintaining Quevedo as technical director. This new company marketed the product under the brand name Ron del Charco.

From this time onwards, there was a notable drop in local sugar cane production due to competition from the tomato growers, who had to buy cane from outside the Aldea and even from other islands. Finally, the factory had to close around 1960.

It is a place where black and white merge to give life, a place created by the magic of nature and the effort of human labour.

Back in 1967 an idea was born: to create a salt structure to supply the salt market on the island of La Palma. In spite of the negative expectations of the rest of the Canarian salt works, Don Fernando Hernández, a romantic, undertook the hard work with the help of the master salinero Don Luis Rodríguez, exporting the model of the Lanzarote salt works.

The third generation of entrepreneurs struggles to give life to salt. A family that has united to give strength to this small salt initiative. From children to grandchildren, they continue with the artisanal work of extracting sea salt, maintaining the same commercial brand name, Sal Marina TENEGUÍA, in homage to the last eruption on the island. The Teneguía sprinkled this history with its ashes, leaving the construction of the salt works paralysed for a year. Ornithologists, botanists and scientists have come to take a closer look at this landscape, so much so that in 1994 it was declared a Natural Area of Scientific Interest (LENAC 12/1994, of 19th December). The salt flats have been growing, in 1994, with the support of one of UNESCO's most important programmes. Its extension was extended, reaching the current surface area of 35,000 m2, giving life to this matured dream.

The salt complex now forms part of a point of reference within the natural and scenic visits to the island. The salt shines, not only because of the constant sun and the warmth of the young earth, but also after sunset, when the lighthouses that illuminate the south of La Palma wake up.

Cosmology owes its name to the title of the work Cosmos by the Berlin naturalist, geographer and explorer Alexander von Humboldt, published in London between 1848 and 1858. Inspired by the advances of positivism and the study of man and nature. La Cosmológica has been one of the most important institutions in the scientific history of La Palma for more than a hundred years, bringing together doctors, botanists, humanists and researchers.

The Cosmological Society was founded by an intellectual minority that participated in the same cultural dynamics and pursued the following fundamental objective: The foundation of a Museum of Natural History and Ethnography, for the study of scientific material of these sciences in general, and especially with regard to the products of Gaea, the geology of the Earth, and the study of the natural history of nature. The official opening of the Museum took place on 23rd January 1887, with the first installations being located in Calle de la Cuna No. 14 in the capital city of La Palma, in premises provided for this purpose by the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País (Economic Society of Friends of the Country). In addition to the directors and members of the organisation, the event was attended by the most representative figures of society on La Palma at the time, including Juan Bautista Lorenzo Rodríguez and Elías Santos Abreu for their later importance.

In the following years, the Cosmológica Museum was nourished by the objects found in the "rummages" carried out by its members, but it also began to be a point of reference for all those in possession of archaeological materials. Sometimes the remains donated to the organisation were accompanied by letters describing the circumstances of the find.

The "Caños de Fuego" Volcanic Cave Interpretation Centre was created as a result of the discovery of a set of volcanic tubes in the area of Las Manchas, from the solidification of the lava emanating from the eruption of the San Juan Volcano in 1949.

It is a centre that aims to disseminate and educate visitors about the geological formations that develop during and after volcanic eruptions and at the same time highlight the environmental importance of the fragility and conservation of the ecosystems surrounding the centre.

The centre has a main exhibition area with visual references to the geological forms of the lava and volcanic tubes, an audiovisual room, guided access to the "Cueva del Vidrio" volcanic tube, a souvenir shop, a panoramic viewpoint at the top of the centre and a cafeteria.

Once you have finished visiting the centre, cross the road and you will find the majestic system of floating walkways that give access to the floating glass viewpoint and the access to the Volcanic Tube "Cueva de Las Palomas".

We practice sitting, walking and Hatha yoga asanas. We use various Kriyas: pranayamas, bandhas, mudras, etc.

The first film "made mankind to achieve moving images that allow us to see and understand the prehistory and history of the early days of cinema.

From the Magic Lantern with its moving image glass plates, to the idealised views of the city of Santa Cruz de La Palma visualised through an optical box. To the panoramas and dioramas and the first cameras that filmed documentaries of the island.

Optical toys, zootropes and phenakistoscopes with moving drawings... And this is just a foretaste of what awaits you there.

Also the Cine NIC, the children's cinema, "the magic of filmmaking", which gave the author of this collection a nod, many years ago, to his fascination with cinema. A journey that goes from eight millimetre films to digital format, with a proven sensitivity for the island's landscape, the setting for films and documentaries with a long didactic scope.

The second most important town on the island of La Palma is worth a leisurely stroll, stopping at every corner and looking up at all times to contemplate the 33 works of art on display in an unusual open-air museum.

Starting from the central Plaza de España, where the church of Los Remedios is located, you walk up the narrow streets of Fernández Taño and El Medio, with their brightly coloured buildings and wooden doors. From them, some of the island's peaks loom intrepidly, heralding the gateway to the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. Behind the church, the secluded Plaza Chica, adorned with palm trees, used to be an important water supply point and is now an essential part of a walk through the history of the island.

It is precisely in the old town of Los Llanos where, in 1999, the façades of the cement and concrete buildings that had replaced stately mansions in an attempt to modernise, began to be considered blank canvases. A rather pioneering idea for the time, the aim was to humanise cities and make them more attractive and approachable.

Giving freedom to the works in open spaces to surprise passers-by by means of an atypical art gallery in which, in addition to paintings, murals, photographs, sculptures and graffiti can be found. Pieces, up to 150 metres long, which, over these 20 years, have been joined to the project with persistent materials to guarantee their durability".

Transport alternatives to reach La Palma

To help you organize your journey independently and conveniently, here are the best available travel connections:

1. By Air (Connecting via Tenerife or Madrid)

Direct flights to Tenerife: You can fly from your country of origin directly to either of the two international airports on the island of Tenerife (Tenerife North - TFN or Tenerife South - TFS).
Layover in Madrid (MAD): Another very convenient option is to fly to Madrid-Barajas and take a direct or connecting flight to La Palma (SPC) from there.
Inter-island connections with Binter: For the final leg to La Palma from Tenerife (or Gran Canaria), we highly recommend flying with Binter Canarias. As the main inter-island airline, they operate a modern fleet of ATR 72 aircraft and offer excellent onboard service.
Frequencies: Binter operates connections almost hourly between Tenerife North and La Palma (flight duration is approximately 30 minutes).
Typical schedule: Daily flights run from as early as 07:00 until late evening connections after 22:00.

2. By Sea (Ferry from Tenerife)
If your flight arrives at Tenerife South, taking the ferry is a very practical, quick option that allows you to travel without baggage restrictions.

Departure port: Port of Los Cristianos (Tenerife South).
Arrival port: Santa Cruz de La Palma (approx. 2h 30m crossing time).
Ferry operators and typical schedules:
Fred. Olsen Express: Daily fast ferry service, usually departing at 08:30 and 19:00 / 19:30.
Naviera Armas / Balearia: Daily departures in the morning (approx. 08:00) and evening (approx. 18:30 / 19:30).
